He was born on 30 June 1909; Raised 16 December 1935, Master, Liverpool Lodge No. 525, 1941.

Bro. Hurst, native and life resident of Liverpool, passed away Monday, 25 February 2008. He founded the Howard H. Hurst Insurance Agency in Liverpool in 1937; in 1979 it became Hurst-Hofer Insurance Agency Inc., with Howard retiring in 1987. Active in the community, he was a member of the Liverpool First United Methodist Church, member and Past Master of the Liverpool-Syracuse Lodge No. 501 F&AM (1941), life member and past president (1945) of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, past president and secretary of the Liverpool Business Men’s Association, life member of the Liverpool Lion’s Club, past director, president and life member of the Underground Facilities Protective Organization, Inc.

Howard was a graduate of Liverpool High School and a member of the Liverpool High School Athletic Hall of Fame; and in 1935, graduated from Syracuse University where he was president of the Economics Club and also served as a member of the Reunion Committee at SU. He was active in the Community Chest and was former chairman of the Onondaga County Red Cross Fund Raising Organization, and a former director of the Finger Lakes Tourism Association headquartered in Penn Yan.

He served for 38 years as a committee member of the Onondaga County Republican Committee and for 20 years as chairman of the Town of Salina Republican Committee, was a former Town of Salina Supervisor, served on the Town of Salina board for many years and was an Onondaga County Legislator.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia (Seager) Hurst in 1986; and his second wife, Barbara Lanning Hurst in 2005. Surviving are his son, Howard H. Hurst Jr., of Mattydale; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Bruce Hurst.

A Masonic Service was conducted today at the Maurer Funeral Home in Liverpool by R.’.W.’. Wm. Geo. Vassily, with Brothers of Liverpool Syracuse Lodge No. 501 in attendance, followed by a religious service conducted by R.’.W.’. Rev. Milton Tennyson Jefferson.
